Why is cold outreach important?

Written by Leanna Olbinsky

Here’s the secret to getting your first HVAC job:

You have to hustle.

If you already know the hiring manager at every single HVAC company in your city, great. Skip this section.

If you don’t, you’re going to have to reach out to people you do not know, get them to like you, get them to care about you, and get them to give you a chance.

And I don’t mean just applying to jobs on job portals.

Yes, you should apply online. We’ll talk about that. It’s a great start.

But that is not the only way people get jobs in this industry.

Companies are drowning in applications

Today, especially with AI, companies are getting bombarded with applications.

I posted a job recently and got 2,000 applications for one job.

No one has time to carefully go through all of that.

So if you are one of hundreds of people clicking “Apply” on the exact same job posting, you have to ask yourself:

How am I actually going to stand out?

That’s where cold outreach comes in.

Apply everywhere

Start with job platforms.

Apply on the major job sites, but don’t stop there. Look for smaller and more specialized job platforms too.

The more places you look, the more opportunities you are going to find.

But again: submitting the application should be the beginning, not the end.

Cold email companies

Find HVAC companies in your city.

Find the recruiter. Find the hiring manager. Find their email address.

Then email them.

Honestly, send an email to every HVAC company in your city if you have to.

Tell them who you are, why you want to work in HVAC, and that you’re looking for an opportunity.

Make it really easy for them to notice you.

Cold call companies

Then call them.

Go through HVAC companies one by one and pick up the phone.

Tell them you’re looking for a job and ask if they can direct you to the person responsible for hiring.

Is it uncomfortable?

Probably.

Do most applicants do it?

No.

That’s exactly why it can work.

And most importantly: walk in

This might be the most valuable, magical strategy of all.

Just walk in.

Grab some donuts.

Go in person to the HVAC companies in your area.

Walk through the door. Drop off the donuts. Say hello. Bring your resume. Try to meet the recruiter or hiring manager.

Put a face and a smile to your name.

Instead of being another resume sitting inside an applicant tracking system, you become an actual person they met.

And I guarantee you are giving yourself a much better shot at getting a job if you’re willing to do that.

The whole idea is simple:

Don’t sit at home and hope someone notices your application.

Apply online. Email. Call. Walk in.

Hustle.

Get people to know who you are and give you a chance.

Cold outreach matters because most people simply won’t do it.

If you will, you immediately give yourself an advantage.
