How to stand out with cold calling?

Written by Leanna Olbinsky

If you can tell, as we layer through all of these strategies, we’re basically just finding more and more ways to stand out.

It’s super easy to submit a job application.

It’s harder to write a personalized cover letter with that application.

It’s even harder to find someone’s email address and cold email them.

So what’s next?

Cold call them.

Literally take out Google Maps, find every HVAC company in your area, and click Call.

Don’t freak out about cold calling

This is where people get terrified.

“Oh my God, cold calling. This is going to be awful.”

But think about what the worst thing is that can happen.

They hang up.

That’s basically it.

And remember: HVAC companies are generally trained to be nice to people who call them because most people calling could be customers. They’re probably not going to immediately hang up on you.

If you’re willing to make these calls, you can stand out from so many other people looking for the exact same job.

What do you actually say?

There are a million cold-calling scripts and strategies.

I think the best strategy is to just be direct.

Say:

“Hi, my name is John. I’m looking for a job in HVAC. Are you guys hiring?”

That’s it.

Seriously.

“Hi, my name is John. I’m looking for a job in HVAC. Are you guys hiring?”

You don’t need some complicated sales pitch.

If they tell you to apply online

Let’s say they say:

“Yeah, we’re hiring. Just go to our website and apply.”

Great.

Say:

“Absolutely, I’ll do that. Is there a recruiter or hiring manager I could speak to?”

Maybe they transfer you.

Awesome.

Maybe they say the person is busy.

Then ask:

“No problem. What’s their name?”

Now you have the hiring manager’s name, which you can use for your cold email.

Then ask:

“What’s their email address? I’d love to shoot them a quick email with my resume.”

Now instead of sending your resume to some random [email protected] inbox, you can send it directly to the person who actually does the hiring.

That’s already a win.

If they’re friendly, keep talking

If the person on the phone seems friendly, ask them questions.

  • “How long have you worked there?”

  • “How’s the culture?”

  • “What do you like about working there?”

Tell them:

“I really, really want to work here. What can I do to get a job at this company?”

Butter them up a little bit.

Flatter them.

Be yourself.

You’re talking to a real person. You don’t need to sound like some perfectly rehearsed salesperson.

You only need one

You might call ten companies.

Maybe only one or two conversations actually go somewhere.

That’s okay.

You only need one.

You need one company to put you through to the right person.

You need one hiring manager to like you.

You need one interview.

And then you’re well on your way to getting your first HVAC job.

So open Google Maps.

Start calling.

And don’t stop because a few people tell you no.
