How to use social media to get a trades job?

A lot of the strategies we’ve talked about require you to really put yourself out there.

And I know a lot of people in the trades are pretty introverted. Honestly, a lot of the best tradespeople are.

You may be going into the trades because you’re really good at working with your hands. You don’t necessarily want to be a salesperson every single day just trying to get somebody to give you a job.

That’s where social media can be incredibly valuable.

Social media is another great way to network your way into your first trades job, and I think there are three major places worth focusing on.

As I mentioned earlier, most tradespeople may not spend much time on LinkedIn.

But a lot of hiring managers, recruiters, company owners, and managers do.

Create a good LinkedIn profile.

Add a nice picture. Fill out your experience. Include your training and certifications.

Then start finding people who work at the companies you want to work for.

Add them.

Message them.

Ask if they would be willing to spend a few minutes talking with you about their career or their company.

Try to get them on a call for an informational interview.

That can go a long way, especially on LinkedIn.

Facebook has a massive skilled trades community.

There are tons of Facebook groups full of people working in HVAC. There are similar groups for plumbing, electrical, and almost every other trade.

Find those groups and join them.

Then get active.

Read what people are talking about.

Ask questions.

Comment on posts.

And most importantly, make a post saying that you’re looking for a job.

Tell people where you live, what kind of work you’re looking for, what experience or certifications you have, and ask if anyone knows a company that might give you a shot.

People in these communities are often remarkably supportive and helpful.

Reddit works in a similar way.

There are large communities for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other skilled trades.

Get involved.

Find people who work in the field.

If someone seems like they might be local to your area, send them a message.

Tell them you’re trying to get into the industry and looking for your first job.

Ask if they have any advice or know anybody who might be willing to give you an opportunity.

Again, people can be remarkably helpful.

You don’t have to be some amazing networker or salesperson to do this.

You just have to put yourself out there a little bit.

LinkedIn. Facebook. Reddit.

Find the people who are already in the industry, start talking to them, and give them a chance to help you.

It is absolutely worth giving it a shot.
