Moving or Willing To Move
Sometimes people are genuinely willing to move for their first HVAC job.
Or maybe you're already planning to move and you're looking for a job in another city before you get there.
If this applies to you, your number one goal is simple:
Convince employers that you actually, truly are going to move.
When we've helped place students into jobs, we've had so many experiences where someone says they want to move, says they're open to moving, and then when they actually get an offer and an employer has put in all of this effort, suddenly they say:
"No, no, no. I'm not actually going to move."
Employers have seen this happen too.
So when someone applies from another city and says they're willing to relocate, the employer may immediately wonder whether they're actually serious.
Your job is to de-risk that.
Show that the move is real
Anything you can do to demonstrate that you're genuinely planning to move is helpful.
For example, you might:
Put an address in the city you're moving to on your resume, if you already have one you can legitimately use
Explain tangible steps you've already taken toward moving
Talk about family or relatives you already have in that area
Clearly explain when you're planning to move
Anything that makes the move feel real instead of hypothetical is in your favor.
The basic idea is the same as everything else we've talked about:
De-risk yourself for the employer.
Most people who casually say they're "open to relocating" may never actually relocate.
Show the employer that you're different.
Being willing to move can open up a lot of opportunities
If you are genuinely willing to move, that's great.
Suddenly, you're not limited to the HVAC companies within 20 or 30 miles of where you currently live.
You can look all over the country.
There are parts of the country that are growing quickly and have major shortages of skilled tradespeople. Being flexible about location can give you access to many more opportunities.
But make it very, very obvious that you're truly willing to move.
And most importantly:
Don't say you're willing to move unless you 100% actually are.
If an employer spends time interviewing you, gets excited about hiring you, and gives you an offer, you should already know whether you're really prepared to make that move.
