SkillCat vs NexTech: What’s the Difference?

Written by Simran Phulwani
Updated over a week ago

We understand there can be confusion between SkillCat and NexTech Academy. While they are closely related, they are not exactly the same product.

Are SkillCat and NexTech the Same?

Yes and no.

  • SkillCat owns NexTech Academy

  • However, they currently operate as separate platforms (LMS) with different features and content

We are actively working toward combining both into a single platform, but today there are still some differences.

Key Differences

SkillCat

  • More user-friendly and interactive

  • Includes video-based learning with voiceovers

  • Offers certifications such as EPA and NATE Ready-to-Work

  • Provides tools and resources like:

    • Troubleshooting guides

    • Error codes

    • Equipment manuals

    • Support tools

  • Allows flexible custom learning plans

  • Easier admin experience for:

    • Adding users

    • Assigning content

NexTech Academy

  • Focuses on structured training programs like Tech Builder

  • Includes Service System and process training (exclusive to Nexstar members)

  • Includes skill competency evaluations

  • More focused on applied learning and structured progression

Current Transition (Important)

We are in the process of migrating NexTech content into SkillCat.

  • HVAC technical content is already available in SkillCat

  • Plumbing and Electrical content are expected to be added soon

  • Some features are still being worked on, including:

    • Service System training

    • Skill competency tracking

Once complete, users will have the best of both platforms in one place.

Which Should You Use?

It depends on your team’s needs:

  • If your team prefers interactive, mobile-friendly, self-paced learning → SkillCat may be a better fit

  • If you rely on structured programs and evaluations (like Tech Builder) → NexTech may still be useful for now

Some teams choose to:

  • Pause NexTech temporarily

  • Explore SkillCat with their team

  • Then decide whether to continue, switch, or combine both

Recommendation

If your team prefers more hands-on or interactive learning, we recommend:

  1. Exploring SkillCat’s training and tools

  2. Gathering feedback from your technicians

  3. Deciding whether to continue with NexTech, SkillCat, or both during the transition
